About Us

Black Hills Coffee Company

HISTORY

In 1993, the aroma of freshly roasted coffee was a rarity in Rapid City, but with a vision and a passion for quality, Jim and Carrie DeForrest embarked on a journey to change that. Armed with a home roaster from Europe and a dedication to perfection, they began their quest to bring the finest coffee experience to our region. After countless hours of roasting, blending, and experimentation, they proudly opened their doors in 1995, starting out in a humble garage space.

Fast forward to today, and the company has grown from those modest beginnings into a thriving roasting facility located in the heart of Rapid City, South Dakota. While the journey has evolved over the years, the commitment to excellence has remained steadfast.  Our physical address now serves as our dedicated roasting and shipping facility, allowing us to focus on what we do best: sourcing, roasting, and delivering the finest Specialty Grade coffee directly to your doorstep.

CURRENT

In March 2024, we jumped with excitement and enthusiasm at the opportunity to lead and co-own Black Hills Coffee Co. fueled by our love for three things: coffee, the Black Hills, and connecting with people.  At Black Hills Coffee Co., our mission is simple yet profound: to provide you with the best Specialty Grade coffee available at a fair and reasonable price, delivered to you at its peak of freshness. Our dedication extends beyond mere transactional exchanges; it's about curating experiences that enrich your coffee journey, fostering a deeper connection between you, our coffee, and the remarkable landscape of the Black Hills.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude for choosing Black Hills Coffee Co. as your coffee supplier. We're confident that you'll be delighted by our selections and prices, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Thank you for your business and for joining us on this incredible journey through the world of coffee and the beautiful region of the Black Hills.

Meet Nick

Nick settled to the Black Hills in the fall of 2022 with his wife (Leslie - native of Valley Springs, SD) and blind lab (Boomer) from Columbus, Ohio where he was born, raised, and lived until the move West.  He spent 11 years in education as a teacher, coach, athletics director, and most recently coordinator of Rapid City Teammates Mentoring Program.  Nick of course enjoys exploring the Black Hills, spending time outside moving/grooving/running/hiking, and experiencing laughs and good times with great people!

Meet Patrick

Patrick grew up on Lake Kampeska in Watertown, SD (Go Arrows!) and graduated from South Dakota State where he wore jersey #17 as a Linebacker for the Jacks.  His journey took him to Newport Beach, CA and Uganda working for a non-profit apparel company called Krochet Kids intl. And loved every second of the experience. Patrick moved to the Black Hills in 2018 for a job opportunity and has loved it ever since.  You can catch Patrick strolling the town or hiking the hills with his dog Frannie, dunking his way to a city league basketball championship with the Chute Roosters, or enjoying either a regular or South Dakota martini as long as it comes with an excess of olives!
